This Saturday, July 9th, Takashi Arai will be opening a three month solo exhibition of contemporary daguerreotypes at the Kawasaki City Museum. From Takashi:
I will exhibit 3 sets of brand-new works for this show:
The first series is “Mirrors in Our Nights,” twelve 8×10 daguerreotypes newly taken after the unforgettable day of March 11th. For many years Touhoku has been my mental mainstay, I tried to make each daguerreotype as an unique monument for my friends displaced by the earthquake and tsunami, and nuclear disaster in Fukushima.
The second set “Portraits of Us” includes 6 portraits of my family and one image from my grandfather’s funeral in the end of this March.
The third sequences are over 120 plates from “Daily D-type projects.” Since January 1st I’ve been taking one daguerreotype a day, and I will continuously add new plates to this show until October 10th.
Also, we would be happy if you would join us on July 16th at kawasaki City Museum for the artists’ talk with Mari Miki, a young conservator and former Mellon Fellow in Photograph Conservation in George Eastman House. I and Miki collaborated to make reproductions of ‘Eirikimaru’ daguerreotypes: the first photographed images of Japanese people in 1850.

To some extent every one who tackles the process does it alone, even if you’ve got someone showing you initially you have to wander in the wilderness and work it out. When you come from a part of the world where there are no veteran daguerreotypists to offer advice (an assumption on my part here, but hopefully an accurate one), how much harder it must be to delve into the process. Cue the age of the internet where the lineage of solitary practitioners since the time of Daguerre are drawn together into a community for the benefit of all.
Jeff Green is a contemporary daguerreotype collector, a sponser of related events and has offered to purchase $100 worth of daguerreotype plates from daguerreotypists for Li of China since he has been having difficulty getting good silvered plates. If you would like to sell or provide plates for Li contact admin@cdags.org and we will facilitate getting them to him.

Jerry Spagnoli has upsized his work with the addition of 11 x 14 inch format (10 3/8 x 13 7/8 to be exact) to his repertoire. He sent us these two scans of the accomplishment, including a portrait of fellow daguerreotypist Adam Fuss.

For those interested in the origins of the Daguerreotype, the Paris photography school Speos and the museum Maison Nicéphore Niépce in Saint-Loup-de-Varennes have launched an online publication of Niépce – Letters and Documents, a collation of the correspondance of Nicéphore Niépce (1765-1833).
The revised online edition of Niépce, Letters and Documents is a compilation of over 700 documents from more than 50 international archives. Some brushing up on your French required.
