    Hi Eric,

Didn’t mean for it to sound that boozy : ) !!

It’s just kind of hard to guess how many people will come to the thing. I’d like all to have fun. I’m renting a car this year, so making the “run” should be easier…..and going to need a lot of ice for beer/wine….have to use the bathtub.

Did you all see the images that made world news lately? period shots of actors Nicholas Cage and John Travolta? Both billed as “vampires” and “time travelers”?? And at $1 million and $50,000??? Well, go to eBay and I just put up a dead on look-a-like of Robin Williams, as an old man. 10 day auction. 99 cents start. No reserve. All proceeds to Dag Society. I mention this to you, Eric, because you are in SF…and I belive Robin Williams lives in SF…..and I am trying to get thru to his Agent and Publicist. And if so, can they get it forwarded to Robin. And if Robin runs with the “vampire time traveler” (he is comic genius)….it could be fun….and who knows..maybe I can cajole Robin in for a sitting. I’ve wanted somehow to get some famous folks for sittings. It would be a great fundraiser.

See you all in a few weeks. Hopefully li Junyio is sending a couple more over for me to show around.

Hello, Greg. With this informal gathering in the “luxo” suite, what I am hoping is to have a heavyweight (certainly not me!) or two chime in to you all on what can be done to get some visibilty to contemporary photo collectors, who don’t venture into images before 1920 or so. Dags aren’t on their “radar screen”. They should be. I don’t know if Grant Romer or Keith Davis are attending, but if they are, I’ll ask them if they could join and say a few things? I am very excited that Chris Mahoney of Sotheby’s is coming to the Symposium to speak on Saturday. But I do not know his travel schedule or arrival. i’d like to ask him (if arrived) if he has any thoughts on the contemporary photo scene. Needless to say, he has the pulse on the market and what the collectors he deals with look for. I just don’t know yet who will be there, but we’ll try. Either way a fun time will be had.

Too kind, Greg! The REAL champions are all you Moderns. For a number of years now, the Moderns have been a VERY large percentage of the proceeds from our fundraiser auctions. I mean, it runs like 40%! All of <you> are the heros, not me. I’m just flipping a couple hundred bucks for some beer and wine. And if we make it till midnight…..(all silly)….I’ll buy the pizza!

Greg, your offer of two spare 1/4 plates is SUPER! Send them on. I have sent an email to confirm with Li his plateholder size. Rob M allerted me the “mm’s” might not match to inches. Rob is a detail guy.. But Li said he coulld use smaller plates, like 1/4. I think.

This is so great, guys….. If we can get him a bunch of U.S.A. plates… Besides a bit of work in polish..it sure looks to me like his issues are copper and plating related. I’m so glad the community here is as anxious as I to chip in and and see what Li can do. Just imagine…there is NOTHING there for him. Somehow he pulled it off…..and he has never even seen a period daguerreotype! Tho’ that’s gonna change!

Things are moving! Andy Stockton just contacted me and said he is donating two 4×5 plates. With his, Alan Bekhuis’s, and a few I am securing with Mike Robinson and Rob McElroy, we now have five plates for Li! Please, if you have a spare one, let me know and get it my way. In a few weeks I’ll get them off to China. And also remember…..Li has never seen a real period daguerreotype, so send along any old headshots you don’t need. We all have some.

And to Li! I hope you read this. I will be in touch. Alan B gave me your contact info and mailing address. My daughter spent time in Bejing and he is now in Shanghai….and I found Federal Express (FedEx) is best to send to China? Is that good for you?? We need an address during the day, for you to sign for the package.

Li, you have more friends than you know, both here on C-Dags.com and The Daguerreian Society. You will be surprised how many are following your progress. Your dedication is impressive. Soon I will get a package mailed to you, and all of us can’t wait to see what you can do with them.

Your friends at C-Dags.com and The Daguerreian Society.

Followup from yesterday. We’ve worked it out to have an “informal reception” of “moderns” at the Symposium. We’ll do it on friday night, from 8 – 10 pm..but of course it will go later. We’ll have it in the Society “Hospitality Suite”. In years past we have gotten some amazing suites! I hope this one is….and on a high floor…with a beautiful water view…. from high floor. I’ll take care of most of the refreshments. Most folks will have eaten by then…..but if midnight rolls around and we want Pizza……well, why not.

I spoke with Mike R and he can help with some plates for Li in China. With what Mike R quoted I think I can swing two 4 x 5 plates for him. But does anyone know what sizes he uses???

Thanks all! Just wanted to let you know we’ll do our best to highlight contemporary makers at the Symposium.

    Cheers, Jeff G

I hope as many of you can make it, as possible. I sponsored last years exhibit of “moderns”, and the feedback was tremendous. It went well with Craig Schneider’s presentation of his modern collection. I think we opened some eyes! I don’t think we’ll be able to have a venue, like last year Atlanta, but I am working on a getting a spot for a informal “Meet the Moderns”. I’ll provide beer, wine and nibbles. There also might be a cool fella’ coming, who would be worth you all meeting. But it’s all too early yet in scheduling. Sally Anyan & Diane at Dag Society HQ are working their butts off.

I’ve been a lurker here since the start, but never signed “on”, since I’m not a “maker”. Just a supporter.

I’d also like to offer to chip in $100 to any maker out there who has a spare, really nice, U.S.A. clad/heavy silver plate…to send to our daguerreian “newcommer”, Li Jungyi, in China. You all have been great in support and response. Come on! The guy needs a non chinese plate. I think he’s got much of the rest down pretty well. I’ll mail a check to anyone. And perhaps others might chip a small amount too? I also highlighted him in my Dag Society newsletter message… you will see in a couple weeks.

Hope to see many of you in October, and I’ll work on getting a place at the Symposium for ya’ll. With drinks….well not the ‘Gentleman Jack”…The “usual suspects” provide that, and have been for the 16 years I’ve been going!…. Hangover city.

    Cheers, Jeff G.
