For those who are without a doubt making it this year, when are you flying in?

Are there any fun pre-symposium activities worth flying in a day early for??

Ken,I know its a LONG flight for you but you gotta make it! It just won’t be the same if you don’t go.

I think Curtis is going… anybody else know for sure this early??

    (just finished booking a room!)

    I use http://www.onlinemetals.com/

No problems so far and they will cut to size… for a little extra cost.

    Fast too.

Good to know thanks. Yes, I’m starting to think the best way to avoid large F-numbers would be to use the sliding camera method like Alan.

This camera is incredible, and unfortunately sold by now… but does anyone happen to have a stereo camera they would like to part with?

Sounds like a great opportunity…I’m in.

The cases look perfect for dags.

The container itself is turning a little red. Must be soaking up some of the bromine. I also put Teflon tape on the threads to make sure the seal is tight.

It’s a good container but I’m not convinced that Teflon is the best choice because of the color change/saturation.

Is anyone else using a Teflon bottle?

Yup Tim is the guy. Thanks Todd.

I guess half a stand is better than no stand but I just can’t believe no one else make these things.

I should have included more information on my initial post. My system of plating that I’ve been using for a year and a half puts on a good amount of silver; sorry I can’t be more exact about the amount. One thing I have learned is it’s not the amount of silver that makes a great plate but the quality and application of the silver. Because of the way the silver is applied it does not create a dog-bone effect (one of the advantages of plating yourself). Also yes the top coat is very thin, one of the reasons for using it, and buffs off on the first use. These plates are not intended for testing and reusing many times but instead plates for those who are ready for that ‘one great shot’.

Alan, they only need minimal buffing, the top coat is easily buffed and should return to a deep black mirror surface. The plates are cut from the factory and surprisingly very accurate. I’ve only had 3 out of about 100 half plates that were a little oversized and one full plate.

I’m not going to be selling anymore because I just don’t have the time and I’m using up my stock already. So this post doesn’t really matter but I wanted to answer these questions.

I haven’t ordered from them yet but Binh has and I don’t think he had any issues. A little long for the shipping but not bad.

Andy, use a piece of heavy stock paper and cut it into quarters and use that to make the tests. It puts marks on the plate because it’s resting on it but give a more acutate test. Try it out!

Here is a recent test I did I’d like to share. It was a bromine quad test that shows how the image sensitivity degrades as too much bromine is applied to the plate.

I don’t have a way to determine the thickness but it’s a good amount. I can take a gilded plate and lightly polish it with a metal compound to take the image off and re-rouge it without going through to the copper. Most of the time twice.

Do you or anyone else know of a way to measure it?

I’ll ship internationally, postage will go up a little depending on the location.

Ummmm, an x-ray machine would be great. I wonder were I could find a used one?

I can make 4×5. Any size up to full plate.

Sounds like a great opportunity not to be missed. Also sounds expensive so I better start saving now!
Making dags there is a MUST. How about some of us bring a "piece" of their equipment with them to assemble a truly contemporary dag studio. Of course what ever will be allowed on the airlines.

Sorry got my numbers mixed up. Its a .2% gold chloride solution (not 2%) mixed with 1.6% sodium thiosulfite (not 4%). I don’t know if more gold would help. The gold molecules are supposed to swap out with the silver molecules 2 for 1 on the plate during gilding (something like that) so I don’t think you can change the reaction by adding more gold. However if you over gild, the plate takes on a covering of what looks like gold. Wonder whats going on then? Time for some experimenting.

What is the sodium sulfite do when added, give more bleaching properties?

I would always mix it from 1 gram powder form. $35 a gram from artchraftchemicals.com and your not paying for shipping water. Also you should dilute it more to a .2% solution, then mix 50/50 with a 1.6% sodium thiosulfate solution to make a batch you want to use for gilding.

I haven’t tried it but I think it needs to be galvanized after polishing because its not pure silver. A while ago Mark Osterman had some sterling stock but warned it needed to be galvanized.
