From your screen name it seems that you may be associated with Kentucky…. Do you live there? I’m in Cincinnati. I’m trying to acquire all the equipment that I need to make dags, but I’m on the 5 year plan and no where near ready. Below is a picture of the fuming box that I’m making. It should work for a 4×5. If you’re interested I can make two more.

Sorry to hear about that, good luck on finding a replacement.captivelightParticipant@forum
Is triple distilled Hg the typical type of Mercury that is used for Daguerreotypes?@ OP
If so, I’m interested in buying some if it’s still available. How much do you have? and what part of the country are you in?Thanks, Ben
captivelightParticipantHi Polly
Can you post the link to the images on imageshack?
captivelightParticipantQuote:See post of 5 July 5 2011Why not just post the link? I don’t see how to search for posts by date.
Thank you
captivelightParticipantIt sounds like he uses the chlorine after the iodine and bromine to give the image a sepia look. Very nice, but it’s just one more step in an already difficult process making it even harder… Kudos to him for getting great results and sharing information. The images look sweet!!!
March 27, 2012 at 1:22 am in reply to: Show us your device to hold your plate while polishing #11436captivelightParticipantCan you fix the link to the video that shows the sanding block in use? I missed it.
Also, where did you get the orangish inserts that hold your plates in the box from the picture shown? are they foam rubber?
Thanks, Ben
captivelightParticipantWell Santa brought me some copper plates for Christmas. Since the elfs don’t make plates she got them from Daniel Smith. She was told that they wouldn’t cut the plates to the required size so I have 4×6 plates. Now I have to find someone with a shear and a good accurate ruler to cut them to size. I also got a 6″ variable speed grinder.
Where do I find a good buffing wheel?
captivelightParticipantI’ve heard that many photographers make their own backs to fit the camera and plate size. Does anyone have any pictures of their setup to share?
Ben
captivelightParticipantRob and Chriso,
Thanks for the links to the suppliers. I will contact them to see if they can get me the sizes that I’m looking for (but not any larger: thanks for the tip).
Ben
captivelightParticipantI would like to buy some plates as well. I’ve called around looking for engravers copper plate and cannot find it anywhere other than a company in NJ that will only sell 2’x6′ sheets, I don’t neeed that much.
Can anyone recommend a place that currently sells copper plates in smaller quanities?
Best, Ben
captivelightParticipantJe ne comprends pas tres bien le francais.
Mais merci
captivelightParticipantThanks, to all of you that responded.
It’s quite interesting to see the varitity of sizes and formats that people use.
I’d like to start out with all 8×10 equipment so that I won’t be limited by size in the future, but that could get expensive very quick. So I’m thinking that I’ll start out with 4×5.
Seems like most of you agree that the degree of difficulty does not increase according to size.
Well, this will get me going on the right track for now. Thanks again for your input.
Best
captivelightParticipantNice, did they let you use a head support?
Hope someone out there is a fanatic and goes for the “Buy it Now” price.
Good luck.
