I haven’t yet found a retail supplier for that item. I did a brief search and haven’t had a chance to look deeper. It looked like a good tool to me when I saw the photo in the galleries section.
Andy StocktonParticipantBack to planning on treating iodized plates as untouchable. Thanks for the clarification.
Re the tape – I couldn’t find a poster tape or cat 109 on the 3M site. The double sided removable I ran across is at this URL:
Andy StocktonParticipantThanks for the clarification. Since I’m still working from theory and not practice, I had jumped to the conclusion that the sensitized plates were as fragile as I had heard the developed image was. Apparently they are at least marginally tougher.
Andy StocktonParticipantI noticed yesterday that 3M (Scotch brand in USA) now has a “removable” double sided tape. I tried some and it seems to cling well, but lets go easier than the original stuff. It didn’t seem to leave any residue, although I didn’t leave it in place for any extended lenght of time.
Does the tape in the middle of the 5×4 stick even though you can’t press down on the middle of the sensitized plate?
Andy StocktonParticipantNew ideas are flowing already! Thanks for the suggestions. Anyone else? I know there must be a number of approaches.
Andy StocktonParticipantI don’t know if everyone wants to rough it, but if we could include a workshop on making landscapes/natural world dags sucessfully I would sure try to come.

Andy StocktonParticipantThanks, I’ll give them a try and report back.
Andy StocktonParticipantHi Eric-
Have you ordered from this company? Any problems with International shipping or other issues?
Andy StocktonParticipantHi Corey-
I got my iodine from Photographer’s Formulary but as you say they are now out of stock. ScienceLab.com has sublimated iodine in stock in 25g quantity. It is my understanding that sublimation and resublimation are just purification processes. Other than that I think it is all just Iodine. I defer to CasedImage on experience however, though I’m surprised to hear that it off-gasses less. Perhaps a bit of work in a mortar and pestle would fix that? Smaller pieces have greater surface area and should produce more off-gassing.
Andy StocktonParticipantIt looks gorgeous. Thanks so much for the details. I had been thinking of making a sort of individual "black-box" type display with internal lighting for the dag only but I like that this shows off the case work as well. It also seems more powerful to have six shown together. That would be especially nice for a series.
Andy StocktonParticipantThe gathering sounds like a fantastic idea. What do the airlines allow?
Andy StocktonParticipantWould you explain a bit about how the display case works? I have heard others say that display of daguerreotypes in a gallery can be challenging.
Andy StocktonParticipantSharing your work like this is very helpful.
Jon – were the scratches on the plate visible when you started or did they only become clear after the image formed?
Eric – Did you just control the bromine exposure by sliding the internal cover plate partway shut? (And BTW thanks for clearing up how to get a model to sit still while I fiddle around trying to get this process to work!)
Andy StocktonParticipantDo you have an opinion on the relative merits of water-white and pyrex? I had seen information on both and wasn’t quite sure what the difference was.
Andy StocktonParticipantThanks for the info and tips Jonathan. The mirroring kit I bought but haven’t used yet includes Cerium Oxide for the recommended final cleaning step.
I didn’t know museum glass was coated. Is that how the non-glare effect is achieved?
Andy StocktonParticipantI have not received one. I only have the one daguerreotype related domain name "thedaguerreotypist.com"
Andy StocktonParticipantAlas, at this point in my career my gallery has never heard of me. Do they charge for this service?
Either way I will chalk this up as another vote for water-white glass. Any other votes? Standard "green-glass" or water-white glass? Any tips on cutting?
Andy StocktonParticipantjdanforth wrote:Wait… it’s SUMMER over there? What kind of black magic is THIS?Not black magic. White magic. It’s something Gandalf did when he was there to film The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Andy StocktonParticipantGood luck with your exhibitions and I will keep my fingers crossed about the Nikon award. That would be fantastic. Re the quiet – yesterday was the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States which may be contributing some to the silence. Many people spend time with family.
Andy StocktonParticipantI found this link which was useful: http://www.ganoksin.com/borisat/nenam/buffing-material.htm;and contained this reference:Particle sizeGetting information on particle size is very difficult. This is understandable as this is one of the differentiators between polish quality companies. One company sells three different green rouges. There may be different materials added to each or most likely there is a difference in the chrome oxide quality and quantity. A smaller micron size being one indicator of higher quality. This makes it tough on us purchasers since we don’t have the information. I was able to get information from one company’s web site on particle sizeCOMPOUND MICRON SIZERed Rouge 3.5 to 5Cerium Oxide 3.5Cerium-R Oxide 1.2But my understanding from this and several articles is that particle size and consistency vary considerably between manufacturers. That is why costs vary so much. If a manufacturer doesn’t certify the size, you don’t really know what you are getting.
Andy StocktonParticipantHi Jon-
Looks like you are making good progress! I was wondering if you did any metering? The two shots have the same exposure with markedly different results. Different light levels or variability of the process?
Andy StocktonParticipantWonderful. Would you share info about how you calculated the exposure?
Thanks!
Andy StocktonParticipantI understand your sentiment. It is easy to get lost in the craftsman aesthetic with the equipment and lose track of making the images. I have that tendency.
How is the spray paint holding up? I have never heard of cellulose paint. Do you recall the brand?
Andy StocktonParticipantLovely woodwork. It does seem like it will be eaten away rather quickly. Perhaps the user will set a glass dish inside to help a bit. I also have wondered if polyurethane varnish would hold up to iodine fumes. Does anyone have experience with that?
