Early this morning the editors of CDags removed a post made by a member that we considered to be significantly off topic. Although it contained a single question about daguerreotypes, the bulk of it consisted of a long discourse on U.S. use of atomic weapons and involvement in wars throughout the world. The writer is entitled to his opinions on these matters and raised many points that significant numbers of people globally feel are valid about US military aggression. Be that as it may, the bulk of the post had nothing to do with daguerreotypes and as the editors of the site we decided to remove it.
In general we do not care to censor the posts or opinions of our members, but we do feel a responsibility for keeping the site focused primarily on it’s purpose – the discussion of contemporary daguereotypes.
In addition we remind all posters that a certain level of civility is expected as well. Heated opinions are fine, personal attacks are not. The member whose post was removed has a bantering and at times insulting style that is not appreciated by all, and that factored in the removal of his post as well. We have no problem with disagreements, challenges and even controversy – such energy can often bring about new ideas and progress, but we will keep a handle on people who resort to insults as a argumentative device.
We are posting this explanation of our actions so that you are aware of our stance, and encourage any response you wish to make whether in agreement or not.
