I have been struggling with getting contrast comparable to a 19th century dag that I own. I have attached a photo in crappy lighting to show that the older dag is easily viewed in almost any light while mine needs a good directional light and is definitely more flat. I am going past a strong yellow into an orange for the 1st iodine and then adding bromine until I see a significant change into a rose red. My plates are electroplated and I have yet to try galvanizing. Could it be the gilding? I am also wondering has been through this. any help would be greatly appreciated

Have you try to use different iodine colour circle? At the moment I prefer to use purple.

I found this posts for you, might be a good starting point:

I guess, not sure about it, so I ask it: Is it possible to view easier the old dag, because of the oxidation of the surface?
