Terrible thing happened to me this week. I recently moved to New York to start my grad work at Columbia. Usually I wouldn’t let my portfolio out of my sight for a second but I took all of my camera gear as my 2 carryon bags on my flight, misc photo gear in one checked bag and enough clothing to get by for the week until the rest of what i shipped out got here.

I insured the hell out of the boxes that I shipped out via UPS. I packed my 11x17x3 portfolio case (containing 6 dags in handmade salvaged oldgrowth redwood cases, and a ton of handworked silver gel prints) in bubble warp and then into a larger box full of bedding, a larger portfolio case with just a few 20×24 prints and some arts supplies. When the box arrived everything was there except for the smaller portfolio case with the majority of my finished prints from the last 4 or 5 years. Some one had the audacity to open the box, pull out my portfolio case put the bubble wrap it had been packed in back into the box and tape it back up somewhere between Nevada and New York.

If anyone sees any of the work from this flickr set floating around at a swap meet or garage sale or what have you, please let me know where and when. http://www.flickr.com/photos/7431866@N04/sets/72157623059858731/

I know its a long shot, but just be warned your stuff could disappear before it gets where it needs to be.

I feel very badly for you. I had a similar experience when I moved my belongings via UPS from Portland, OR to Boston. I took my valuables with me when I flew, but then I checked my bags. My bags took a detour to LA and when they got to me, my most valuable possessions were missing. Then when my UPS boxes arrived, they were damaged and torn and there were things missing.

As far as UPS goes, I had a friend who worked at an oriental rug store (in Portland, OR). He said that when they shipped rugs, they would never state the full value because if they did, they would never get to their destination. But then again, the risk of under-insuring is self-evident. So the whole thing is a catch-22.

Your dags are certainly recognizable. If anyone had the nerve to post them on eBay I would see them and contact you.

I am sorry about your loss. I would be curious to know how the claims process goes; but having made a few dags I understand this is not just about the material value.
