Hi All,
This note is to find out if there would be enough interest by our community in having a modern daguerreotype exhibition in Atlanta during the “month long Photography festival” and the Daguerreian Society Symposium. Please read the post carefully so you understand what is being proposed.
Preliminary discussions with George Whiteley, a Daguerreian Society member based in Atlanta have determined that there is room to display approximately 40 images. Grant Romer has agreed to act as juror for the exhibition making the selections from those willing to submit work for inclusion in the show. If there is interest, can the moderators of this site create a page that we can upload images to for Grant to review and make his selections?
George Whiteley has located a venue around the corner from the hotel where the Daguerreian Society Symposium will be held. Quoted from a message to me …
The Terminus building is literally around the corner from the Doubletree Hotel where the symposium will be based. When I was originally told about this space and without seeing it, I was initially put off in that I thought it would be a glorified hallway and a difficult space to for a display of daguerreotypes. However, now that I have been there in person I believe it would work for our modern show. It has workable secure cases and sufficient lighting to pull off a show of reflective objects. Please see the pictures. There are four cases total. All are the same generous size with self contained movable halogen lighting inside and outside of the cases. The advantage of having an exhibit in this space would be that the display would stay up longer–from October until January, thus more people would be able to see what modern daguerreotypes are, and it will be in a public space. Also their gallery installers would install the exhibit at no charge, with the added possibility of a complimentary flyer to go with the exhibit. The disavantage would be that the all of the images would have to be on site at least 10 days before the opening of the symposium and either the artists themselves would be responsible for FedEx shipping to and from the venue. The space is secured with a security guard present literally next to the cases at all times, plus the glass is quite thick and the cases lock securely. The gallery owners have full insurance coverge on all items which they have on display and will not be an extra charge to us.
George needs an answer from us within 10 days to secure the space. Based on the response to this message, I will instruct George to secure the space or let it pass.
best
Mike Robinson

I will gladly participate in a juried exhibition.
If the exhibit does come to fruition, it would be great if there was a way for the exhibit to be included as an integral part of the Daguerreian Society Symposium, instead of just a place to visit while people were in Atlanta. Could the opening night Symposium reception be held there, or possibly some other Symposium event?
The Terminus is a very prestigious and impressive place, with upscale condominiums, restaurants and businesses. Lots of people would be exposed to the daguerreotype for the first time if we were able to secure this space for a three-month exhibit. I don’t know where the proposed hallway cases are located within the large complex of modern buildings known as Atlanta’s Terminus, but it seems like a win-win situation for everyone.

It is exciting that the space may have general public traffic, a great opportunity to show contemporary daguerreotypes more widely. Perhaps there could be some way of highlighting the exhibit for symposium attendees as Rob suggests. This would be particularly true if any of the entrants are interested in selling their works to Daguerreian Society members, since they will not be able to be on display in the regular symposium selling area.
