Hello,
I do not practice Daguerreotypes myself, but I am an avid tintypist and member of LFforums since ’06. I’m sure there is some cross over with this forum.
I have 1.3 kg of elemental mercury I am looking to sell to responsible owners. I can divide it up, of course. It is older “triple distilled” Hg from Merrell scientific that is still sealed. It is my understanding that less than 500ml or 1lb of division 6.1 hazards can be shipped via private courier as per DOT title 49, with appropriate packing (double boxed, triple bagged), labeling, and MSDS. This is from my correspondence with a metals dealer and from reading DOT 49 itself. However there is still some confusion as to whether UPS/fedex will charge Hazmat or not. If those on this forum express interest I will call the DOT hazmat customer service line and clear that up.
As for price. You point me to where you get your mercury, and I will take off 40%. I will cover shipping, and also Hazmat fees if necessary if the quantity you’re looking for is legal to ship and will afford me a few bucks off the top.
There doesn’t seem to be a private message function on this forum, so, if interest is expressed, I will perhaps make a new email address and post it here. Or, I don’t know, mods?
Thank you

Is triple distilled Hg the typical type of Mercury that is used for Daguerreotypes?@ OP
If so, I’m interested in buying some if it’s still available. How much do you have? and what part of the country are you in?Thanks, Ben

Thanks, BenYes. “Triple distilled” is just an older term that means the mercury was literally boiled and distilled through a column three times over. Should be no less than 99.9% purity.
Mercury slowly forms oxides over time. The batch I have will have a very thin film of oxide on top. Perfectly normal and I’m sure some of the folks on here may have noticed it on older bottles of Hg. You can skim it off and dispose of it properly at local hazmat day, etc.
I’m in MA. I originally had 1.4 kg, but now only have 250 grams. I’ve sold the other mercury @ $0.20 per gram + $10 shipping to others with great success. Let me know in the thread here if that sounds good and we will discuss how to get in contact with one another, as I’m not about to post my email here.
February 16, 2013 at 6:21 pm #15436CasedImageKeymasterFiltering the mercury is easy to do – make a funnel by taping and coiling a piece of paper at a angle, where the opening at the base is very small. Pour the mercury into the funnel over a suitable container. The oxides on the surface will get caught on the sides of the paper funnel and the cleaned mercury will pass through

I inherited about 2.7 lbs of elemental Mercury from the previous owner of my 110 year-old house. He was probably a prospector. ( I live in a part of the world where prospecting was common).
I’d like to sell it for $50 plus shipping by UPS. There is some dust on top, but it’s still very usable.
I would ship it inside a a thick, glass bottle, sealed in a metal container with much packing, all in a well-padded box. It will not leak. Shipping to United States only, please.
References: I sell on eBay under the name, “Langhorn.” I have 1,268 positive feedbacks, and one negative (bidding issue). I have sold several items on the Large Format Forum.
Pay by PayPal or Money Order.
If interested, please email me at: marcomilazzo@elp.rr.com
Email if you want to see a photograph of it.
February 19, 2013 at 3:02 pm #15443amilneParticipantThere are multiple legal and safety concerns with Marco’s proposal.
I contacted the mods about this but I don’t want anyone buying from him in the meantime.
February 19, 2013 at 5:00 pm #15444Marco MilazzoParticipantOffer to sell withdrawn
I don’t need $50 that much, and I need multiple liability issues even less. Consider my offer to sell Mercury withdrawn.
I’ll see if the local university has any use for this stuff, and if not, I’ll take it to the city’s hazardous materials collection site.
Thanks anyway,
MM

Why are there legal issues with Marco selling mercury and not you?

That’s a valid point. Marco, you saw my post on LFforums, so, no need to go over the reasons. If you really want to ship it contact me via LFforums and I’m happy to coach you through it. Its just that what you are describing is almost a worst case scenario. If you ship it via air it is a worst case scenario. Unless you are talking about a solid iron or steel (not stainless steel) vessel then I would disregard all those comments on LF forums telling you not to worry about it.
And also, yes, I do take exception to pirating my thread! You can start your own, if you’d like.
