Here’s a thread for discussion about the big event on the contemporary daguerreian horizon – the NYC exhibit in March 2013 at the Center for Alternative Photography in NYC. – http://www.ImageObject.com

This so you can ask questions about the exhibit and give I can give some background/context to our organising of the event and why we made certain decisions.

Some background – the event grew from a chance meeting – I was in NYC in October 2011 and walking around the Occupy New York protest at Zucotti park with veteran daguerreotypist Harvey Zucker. There amongst the crowds was Geoffrey Berliner, director of the Center for Alternative Photography, taking polariod portraits of the occupiers. Through Harvey’s introduction I was invited for a tour of the Center the next day. The meeting of its management and a cdags admin led to the natural conclusion – lets have a international contemporary daguerreotypes exhibit!

Cdags.org management is a dedicated bunch of daguerreians but as a organisation we don’t have any financial backing or resources. We have built the site with its blog, forum, wiki and extensive resource pages through 100’s of unpaid hours, triumphing the notion that adversity breeds efficiency and what can be achieved with the pooling of skills.

The advent of the exhibit has brought forward our intention to create more of a organisation in the real world rather than just online, in the form of events and gatherings, with the general aim of furthering and advancing the genre.

With a lack of monetary resources though, for the exhibit this means charging fees for submission and requiring artists to cover the shipping of their artworks to and from the exhibit. There are not insubstantial costs associated with putting on such a event, some catering for the official opening, we are planning to have some display cabinets made for non framed works, the exhibit will need to be staffed for its hours open to the public and cdags.org is covering half the amount for cash prizes (Penumbra/CAP is providing the other half) . The cdags admins involved will be absorbing personal costs of installing, running and de-installing the exhibit (travel, accommodation expenses and unpaid work).

We are excited and looking forward to giving 110% to make the exhibit meet your expectations and are looking forward already to IO-2 and having this annual event in our lives. For many years I have travelled to the states in Oct/Nov for Daguerreian society meetings and am looking forward to seeing NYC in the springtime on a regular basis.

Many of the details of the Symposium at the opening of ImageObject, have yet to be finalised, so if you would like to deliver a talk please get in touch with us. We hope to have a display of daguerreian equipment by contemporary makers as well as the talks and round table discussions.

I am sure that I speak for the majority of members of the Cdags site in saying that the work put in by the ‘management’who make the site so helpful, is amazing. So firstly thank you for a wonderful site. I wish it had been here when I started making dags.(I did have some help and encouragement from Jason Greenburg Motamedi which was invaluable)

Secondly, I am sure that you will have lots of new, original and beautiful entries from productive dag makers. I will be entering and am happy to pay to add NYC to my list of places exhibited. I hope that everyone else appreciates your efforts and join in to celebrate the Cdags website in NY.

Remember, sites like this do not just happen, they need loads of work, so thanks from Dr Dag in the UK! 😀

    Hi Marc

The artist must cover the costs of sending the artworks to and from the exhibit. The artworks will be received by the Center for Alternative Photography and Cdags.org admins will be installing the show and will be sending them back to the artist, but the artist must pay for the shipping/postage.

    regards

    Alan

    Hi,
I understand that you can tell me after the expo what the costs would be for sending back my work.

    Thx,

    Marc

Hi Marc, the shipping cost will depend on the size and weight artwork packaged up ready to ship. There is no extra cost by us for sending it to you, so you can work out the cost by looking at the website of fed-ex or UPS in the united states. We will just be packing up the artworks for return in the packaging that they arrive in, from the artists.
    regards,
    Alan.

    Bello,
I have no idea who and how I can pay a firm for the transport from the US back to Belgium when I am living in Europe.

    Thx,

    Marc
