Hi, whats the focal length of the lens?

I do not know much about theese lenses, I’m a collector. how do you tell the focal length ?
when I bought it I was told it was a half plate lens, but it would cover whole plate with some vinyeting/swirl
Point the lens at the distant horizon and measure the distance from the back lens element to where an image is formed (use a piece of card).
When I do this (if I did it correctly) it would be 4 inches. so now how do you tell what size plate this will cover ?
