Hi I am in search of a mentor to guide me through the wonderful world of Daguerreotypes. I am 100% willing to work hard. I have a very positive attitude and am willing to do anything. I have many talents and can build anything needed for the process. right now I am working in Ambrotypes. If you are willing to take on an assistant you will not be sorry. I live in the Seattle Tacoma area. Thanks….

    Hello David,

As far as I know there are only two Daguerreotypists in the Northwest. I am in Portland, and if you are willing to come down, and really mean that you are willing to do anything (Dag related of course), perhaps I can help. In a month or two I will be preparing a large batch of brass plates for silver plating. It is a lot of boring mindless labor, but it will teach you quite a bit about plate preparation. Plus you can make some for your self.

    Not very exciting, I know.

If you’re already doing wet plate, then you’ll have no trouble with the dags. It is an entirely different process, but you already have the patience. Dags travel better too. You can make up a bunch and take them out, no darkbox! Jason’s offer as a good one. I strongly recommend taking him up on it. Never pass up a chance to get plates! Plus making them up with someone else is always better. My 2 daughters help me with the polishing the time passes faster.

    cheers,

Yes Jason I mean what I say, just give me a heads up and I will be there I am anxious to gain any knowledge I can and boring mindless work is important part of the learning process. Please email me when you get ready to work on the plates. Thanks David….davidharmsphotography@gmail.com

    Hello David,

My name is Ken Nelson, I’ve earned a minor reputation as a daguerreotypist over the last 34 years… I now live on Bainbridge Island (no ferries from Tacoma!) My fault, I haven’t been keeping up with CDags like I should, so I missed your posts.

Absolutely take Jason up! Get to work, earn stripes. I’m not going to be working much until November (won’t be available much either) but I’d like to meet you then. We need more Left Coast Daguerreians.

David came down on Saturday and we prepared 25 brass 4×5 plates to be sent to the plater. It was a very long day of filing, sanding, and buffing…
