Thought I would start a thread to document the opportunities for collecting contemporary daguerreotypes. Now and again they come up on ebay, feel free to post them here, even if its your own lisiting.
This one is on ebay france and is by Marc Kereun
via Google translate here is the text from the listing:
Daguerreotype contemporary 1 / 4 plate
entitled: “Port de Joliette in Marseilles.”
Shooting in November 2008 from the vicinity of
Novotel. This daguerreotype recalls, in a
different view by Marc Antoine Gaudin, to
1843, with his patented machine some time ago,
reducing the weight of all equipment
daguerrien (see image 2).
His plates were round with a diameter of 7.2 cm,
allowing instantaneous through the short focal length and
the use of accelerators, the bromine
here.
This daguerreotype is one of a series of excursions
Daguerriennes contemporary.
The method of Louis Daguerre, invented in 1839: plate
silver sensitized to iodine vapor, latent image
revealed to mercury vapor, referred to in the thiosulphate
sodium.
A beautiful unique and original daguerreotype, with warm tones,
heightened with gold (process Fizeau, 1840), was signed on the back
drypoint “M Kereun 2008.

Rappelling with a small golden wand, all under
anti reflective glass, UV, and closed by

February 28, 2009 at 9:50 pm #7966Andy StocktonParticipantBeautiful work Rob. I especially like the feeling the DOF evokes on the cone flower.
I am curious though – regular photography seems to be a poor seller on e-bay. (Too much supply, not enough demand I imagine). In your experience do daguerreotypes sell reasonably well on ebay? (Yours or others) I’ve tried to research sales on ebay and the contemporary works are hidden in the flood of antiques.
March 1, 2009 at 9:49 am #7967dagistParticipantAndy,
Thanks for the compliments of my images.
Even though my own daguerreotypes are listed for sale in my eBay Store, my personal feeling is that eBay is not a good place to sell contemporary daguerreotypes. You can get some attention and exposure by using eBay as a marketing tool, but don’t expect many sales because there just aren’t very many collectors interested in buying a contemporary “process,” simply for the sake of the process, no matter how difficult the images are to produce. Collectors of vintage images, on the other hand, do often collect a “process” such as daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, salt prints, etc. but most of them have little interest in contemporary work.
The photographic art world is another area that has very few contemporary daguerreotype collectors, although I’m hoping that will change. In this arena, the “process” takes a back seat to who you are (how recognized an artist you are) and what it is you are trying to convey or communicate with your art.
The contemporary daguerreotype is slowly beginning to be recognized as a medium unique unto itself and capable of imagery unlike any other in the world. It is now time for daguerreotypists to produce images that will compel the art world to stand up and take notice. Selling contemporary daguerreotypes will then become a lot easier.
Cheers,
Rob McElroy

October 4, 2010 at 4:05 pm #9295jdanforthParticipantI was hoping to sell a couple of my images at the Symposium. Does anyone have any suggestions for doing that? Hehe…
October 4, 2010 at 11:27 pm #9299greg7mdpMemberEasy! Just find someone who has to have them! Hehehe…
Seriously, you can do one or more of the following:
– get a table to show them during the trade fair
– register your room for the room hopping (at the Dag. Soc. registration table) and show them to visitors
– put them for sale at the consignment auction on Saturday evening
But most Daguerreian Society members are interested in vintage dags. The market for modern ones is quite modest.
Good luck,
gregory

March 10, 2012 at 1:50 am #11403newone2010ParticipantHi everyone,
Rob’s thoughts of contemporary works is exactly as what I think about.
“The photographic art world is another area that has very few contemporary daguerreotype collectors, although I’m hoping that will change. In this arena, the “process” takes a back seat to who you are (how recognized an artist you are) and what it is you are trying to convey or communicate with your art.”
I think Jerry,Takashi,Binh,Mark Kessell did it well. Our superiority(compared with other process) is not that we can control so hard process and the process is how different than others, but how we can let the unique process combined with your conceptions subtly. The importance is not only the process, but the process is just a skill(or method) to present your own ideas (or conceptions). At this point,I think sometimes perfect, flawless technique and results is not the first thing to think about.
Maybe We can do something together.Collect eachone’s chosen dags together, find someone who knows contemporary art and the history of photography well to be the curator, have some regular and formal exhibitions in good galleries or museums, collaborate with some professinol people who have good experience in popularizing comtemporary art works. That will be different.Maybe we emphasized the process itself too much and ignore the potentials of expressive force of contemporary conceptions before.I think we have to change our thoughts now.One person has too little strength, let’s do something together.
Look forward to knowing how you think about it.
As you all know,my English is poor.Sorry for any impertinent works.
Thank you,
Li
