    The hand vacuum pump found in auto parts stores does not have enought capacity to evacuate a bell jar. A water aspirator sold in chemical supply houses is a cheap alternative if water consumpion is no problem. A small rotary vacumm pump used by refrigerator repairmen is the best option. You can by a used one on EBay or get a new one from artist supply houses like Danial Smith.
