Hi.I know there are two kinds of silver electroplating.

One make the plates to be almost mirror surface, another make the plates to be Matte(matte).

The new plater I found told me mirror surface plating almost did not change the content of silver as the matte plating, although he added some kind of brightener in the chemicals.

The last plater told me he did not add any kind of brightener, but the surface of the plates were mirror face too.(OK,considering the bad cooper polishing, almost mirror face with many scratches).

If the new plater is honest, that means the last plater lied to me.

So,I want to know what of your plates after electroplating look like? Can someone show me pics of them?

    best,

If no brightener is added the silver will bright when the coating is very thin (0.1 mil) but will become matte or cloudy white as the electroplating becomes thicker.

Polishing of the thicker coating will not make this dull silver coating bright enough for good Dags. There is also a third type of silver plating called semi-bright which is in between matte and bright. (less brightener)

    Hi John,

Thank you so much for showing me the picture.I speak English not well,so I want to ask more questions:

Does good silver plating must to be added brightener to get enough bright and mirror face? Does the brightener change the percentage composition of silver?

    best,

    Hi John,

I saw that there were 2 flash lights with soft boxes in the mirror of the plate. :P

Do you use them for making dag portrait? What is the biggest aperture of your lens? How powerful are the flash lights?

I use flash lights too.Because I am doing experiment,I just have two lenses, one is F 5.6,another is F 8,and I have two flash lights only 800W. Bigger aperture lenses are very very expensive and difficult to be found in China.

According to some the brightener make the silver plate more pourous but harder to polish.

There is no signifcant effect on silver content but some increase in sulfur from the brightener seems likely.

The flashes are 9600ws Speedotron 105 heads.

I have a 150mm Zenotar f2.8 lens but have not used it yet.

With a f3.5 lens only one 9600ws flash is enough to take a mercury Dag @ 1 meter.

However, it takes 6 or 8 such flashes to make a Becquerel Dag at 1 meter.

    9600ws?What a powerful flash!

How much each this kind of light cost?

I thought some of you use six 1600ws flash lights together before. Most powerful flash I saw is just 2400ws,and it is really expensive.
