Greetings everyone.
My name is Damian VanCamp and I’m looking to assist for a Daguerreotypist in the NYC area.
I graduated from RISD in 2007, and worked for a beauty and cosmetics photographer for two years before the recession hit. Before college, I interned for a month at the Mary Boone Gallery. After having worked on the business-end of art, and the commercial side of photography, I would like to complete the circle by working/assisting/interning for an artist before applying for an MFA, and I would like that artist to be a practicing daguerreotypist.
I fell in love with the medium my junior year of college, and have since been soaking up all I can about every aspect of it – the chemical, the technological, the historical, and the artistic. I am most fascinated by the sculptural element of the daguerreotype – the fact that it is, at the end of the day, a physical object made with precious metals. A daguerreotypist can be a photographer, chemist, jeweler, and, when there’s no out-sourcing involved, book-binder, all wrapped up in one.
I do have my own daguerrean projects in the works, but I also feel working/assisting for a daguerreotypist would be beneficial, since everyone here knows there is more than one way to skin this cat, so to speak, and one can never learn/known enough about Daguerreotypy and the seemingly-infinite methods that can be employed.
I have had the pleasure of meeting with Mr. Jerry Spagnoli, Mr. Mark Kessell, and Mr. Sean Culver, and hope to meet other practicing daguerreotypists, particularly those who might be in need of an extra hand.
My email is DamianVanCamp@gmail.com, and it, as well as a downloadable PDF of my resume, can be found on my web site, http://www.DamianVanCamp.com.
Thanks!
