Hi guys,
It was my first attempt to do a plate polish and here’s the background.
I have 6×6 clad plates from Mike Robinson and tried polishing. Off the packaging, the clad plates I noticed had lines on them. That’s the natural surface.
When polishing, are those lines supposed to be polished away? Here’s what I did and pretty much followed Mike Robinson’s instructions on polishing:
1) Set the plate on the table over a not-slip surface.
2) I dabbed with plate with Nuvite Nushine Grade S around 16 (finger) dots on the whole plate.
3) Dropped about 10 drops of denatured alchohol on the plate.
4) Placed the ultra suede on top of the plate
5) Ran the Bosch ROS on top of the suede using the lowest setting. Applied a bit of pressure on the it. My Bosch ROS had that foam applicator pad on the velcro.
6) Did the polishing every 90 seconds. Did it around 6x for a total of 9 minutes of polishing, placing nuvite and denatured alcohol during the intervals.
First 2 90 sec intervals, I used Side “A” of the suede. Next 2 intervals, I used Side “B”. On the next two intervals, I used another suede.
Attached is a picture of the polished plate beside the unpolished one.
You’ll notice on the pic that I still have those horizontal lines on my polished plate.
Thanks,
Bing

you haven’t quite followed my directions. Below are how your descriptions differ from my instruction.
16 finger dabs of Nushine S is too much, 2 or three for a small plate.
use mineral spirits not alcohol to dilute
use highest speed R.O. settings not lowest, with firm downward pressure
use cotton velvet, not ultra suede.
also you might consider sanding the plate with 3M micro finishing sheets before Nushine polish,
best

When I took the Robinson workshop at the GEH I skipped the initial step of sanding first and managed to get a really nicely polished plate with just the random orbital. Any imperfections shouldn’t be a problem as long as the plate has a good overall initial polish. The hand buff will tell you if you need more time on the random orbital……

1) I was going through the net and I had thought mineral spirits was the same as denatured alcohol. I made that wrong assumption.
2) ok on the RO setting…
3) May I ask what grade the micro finishing sheets are?
On another note, I actually just made an electrolyte for galvanizing, wanted to ask, is the sodium thiosulfate solution that contains the AgCl light sensitive? I placed in a black bottle. Is the galvanizing step light sensitive too or is it something that can be done inside the house w fluorescents on?
I’m assuming that the sky blue is done by inspection but more or less how long does it take?
Thank you so much. Feels like I just jumped into the deep end of the pool…

Thank you again.
