Exhibit – Eric Mertens

Published by under Exhibits

California seems the place to be with more and more daguerreotype exhibits cropping up there, the latest on the horizon showcases the work of Eric Metens;
“I was excited to be asked to participate in a group art show at Kuhl Frames +Art in Oakland. Travis is the owner of this hip shop in downtown Oakland who is dedicated to representing emerging artist to the community and has very inspiring art shows hung in his space monthly… Among some of my older pieces I will be showing a group of occupational portrait daguerreotypes from an ongoing series that will be extended through the summer.”

Your Daguerreotypes @ Bry sur Marne

dmansion1

An opportunity for a gathering of Daguerreotypists and/or a Exhibition of contemporary daguerreotypes in the Daguerre’s town of Bry sur Marne presents itself on this the 170th year since the annoucement of the process.

Marc Kereun, president of the Daguerre Association of France has responded to the concept (see below) and we would like to hear your thoughts on it.

Even if you could not make the journey, would you be willing to submit Daguerreotype(s) for exhibiting in Bry?

The third week of September sounds like a good aim as it gives time for everyone to prepare for a trip or to ready material for an exhibition.

For those Daguerreotypists that do attend the opportunity presents itself here to organise a set up for producing Daguerreotypes at the event. Another idea is that workshops could be offered by those that do this on a regular basis.

Comments can be left here or in the Dagforum topic

From Marc Kereun;
“The celebration of the annoucement of the daguerreotype process is a good opportunity to our Association “Louis Daguerre, le magicien de l’image” to remind of the genius of Daguerre, 170 years after. In 2001, we had contributed to the organization of exhibition on the work of Daguerre, on the occasion of the 150th birthday of its death in Bry.

Then, an exhibition of contemporary daguerreotypes gathering daguerreotypists authors in Bry would be a great event in the photographic agenda 2009.

The Association Louis Daguerre, with the collaboration of the Commune of Bry-sur-Marne, would be happy to study with you the organization of these cultural events.

For the date, it would be interesting to couple exhibition with event : ” les Journees du patrimoine ” (at about the 3rd weekend of September) during which the persons will be able to visit the workshop of restoration of the Diorama (1842) of Daguerre in Bry.”

Exhibit – Silver Mirrors: Daguerreotypes by Girault de Prangey

Published by under Exhibits

Musée Gruérien in Switzerland is exhibiting Daguerreotypes by Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey, who travelled extensively in Europe and the Near East between 1841 and 1850, producing almost a thousand daguerreotypes on the way.

The Musée recently rediscovered and preserved a collection of 61 daguerreotypes by this talented pioneer showing views of Basel, the Jura, Bern and its highlands, Vevey, the Tête-Noire passage in the Valais region, the Mont-Dore ruins in Auvergne and the Mer-de-Glace in Chamonix.

SILVER MIRRORS highlights these works, together with 17 of Girault de Prangey’s images of Paris and the East Mediterranean – Athens, Istanbul, Izmir, Lebanon, Jerusalem and Cairo (National Library of France). These daguerreotypes are among the earliest surviving one and a publication accompanies the exhibit.

Musee d’Orsay Daguerreotype Exhibit

Published by under Events,Exhibits

Exhibits of Daguerreotypes don’t crop up very often and as a Daguerreotypist seeking inspiration I was very pleased to recently visit the Musee d’Orsay in Paris and find such an event.  This is the second exhibit for the Museum of Daguerreotypes, the last being in 2003 when I also happen to be in Paris.  That was a much larger exhibit with plates from private collections and part of it travelled to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.  The current exhibit, on until September is smaller in scope and are just from the colletions of the Musee d’Orsay, none the less my cup of inspiration runeth over.

According to the exhibition catalogue the last exhibit brought about a flurry of collecting Daguerreotypes by the Musee.  It is odd that in France that Daguerre and the Daguerreotype is not more celebrated.  The exhibit had very fine examples of stereo Daguerreotypes and for some very fine passe partout, including the faux tortoiseshell type.
