An update from the IO-1 exhibition space (wi fi enabled) as I burn the midnight oil…
Symposium speaker schedule change
– Due to illness preventing him from flying, Marinus Ortelee will not be attending the opening and giving a talk at the symposium. this means that the afternoon schedule after Takashi Arai will be Alan Bekhuis at 2pm and Mike Robinson at 3pm, our day concluding around 4pm.
Installation
Since Monday I have been hard at work making the exhibition space daguerreotype viewing friendly and installing the artworks. Center for alternative Photography staff are most excited by the event and have been a great help and support to the event, a very big thanks to Eric, Jeffery, Christine, Erica and Jessye.
Catalogue
I have made a blurb.com book for the catalogue of the show. We will have 10 advance copies available for sale at the opening but they will be publicly for sale at blurb.com on tuesday afternoon.
Purchase daguerreotypes online
Also from tuesday afternoon for the two weeks the exhibit is up will be a online store on the ImageObject.com for those wishing to purchase the submitted daguerreotypes made available for sale during the show. I hope to offer again this feature during the year for limited times so that funds can be raised for next years event, through the 10% sales commission.
Pictured below are the catalogues, the gallery cards and business cards of your IO management team.

Cdags.org is pleased to announce sponsorship support for the ImageObject Exhibition from the Archive of Modern Conflict (AMC). As a photographic collecting institution it has had a large presence in the market in recent years and makes a another perfect partner for this exhibition. AMC as well as supporting the exhibition generally, they are co-sponsoring the cash awards (1st 2nd and 3rd best in show) with the Center for Alternative Photography in NY. The Center is donating the use of the venue for the exhibit and accompanying symposium, also they are providing advertising, promotion, assistance in the final shipping returning art works.

For the Imageobject event we would like to encourage daguerreotypists and makers of daguerreotype equipment, to display equipment on the day of the symposium (Wednesday April the 3rd). Fuming boxes, Mercury pots, cameras, dark slides, buffing paddles, if you use it to make dags we would like it to generate discussion.
We will be having a series of talks in the Canter for Alternative Photography’s skylight studio (upstairs from the exhibition space) the day following the opening gala. Alongside new equipment for sale we would like to encourage people to display their equipment to aid in the forum of discussion and sharing of ideas.
If you’re not attending you can ship equipment for display (for sale or not) but you will have to cover the cost of shipping to and returning from, as the artists are doing with the artworks on display. We will be staffing the exhibit and symposium and will take good care of the equipment and ensure it gets back to you.
Our aim is to encourage and support the makers of daguerreian equipment so that it is easier for people to obtain and take up the art.

Máté Bakody has started a new group on Facebook for Hungarian artists interested in learning more about the daguerreotype process. He established the group, along with Bálint Flesch, this past September. The name of the group is: Magyar Dagerrotípia Kör (Hungarian Daguerreotype Community) and all posts are written in their native language to help educate and encourage interested artists to join their online community. To join the group visit the Magyar Dagerrotípia Kör page.

The Daguerreian Society has cancelled its contemporary daguerreotypes exhibit at its November symposium due to a lack of submissions. Feedback from daguerreotypists cited the lack of a return shipping option for artworks as a hurdle in submitting, not everyone was planning on attending so they wouldn’t be there to retrieve their images at the end of the exhibit.
This of course won’t be a issue with next years ImageObject exhibit as a Cdags admin and Penumbra/Center for Photography staff will be packaging up the daguerreotypes and shipping them back to the daguerreotypists (the cost of shipping though is to be paid for by the artist). Having two exhibits on the horizon may have confused some – a couple of people have asked about submitting plates but not attending. Just to clarify, for the ImageObject exhibit you don’t have to be attending in person to have your daguerreotypes in the exhibit. Submissions for selection are sent via email and then regardless of whether you’re attending the daguerreotypes need to be shipped to the Center for Alternative Photography ahead of time for the installation.
In other news the Dagforum is back up and running again, we took it down for a few days to do maintenance to combat the spam attacks it has been suffering of late. I have started a thread there on the ImageObject exhibit to give some background on it and to hear any thoughts/questions you might have.

A deadline for submissions to the Daguerreian society contemporary daguerreotypes exhibit around the time of this year’s Baltimore symposium is fast approaching – 17th September 2012. It will be held at the main gallery of Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) from October 31st to November 11, 2012. The Society is calling for contemporary daguerreotypists to submit up to two plates for the exhibit. return shipping isn’t an option so to be sure to be there or getting a society friend to pick up your images at the end of the symposium and exhibit. Collectors of contemporary daguerreotypes are also encouraged to display plates they may own, so this will make for a great tour de force of contemporary daguerreotypy. The contemporaries will have the option to speak their minds as well as display their art with 3 – 5 minute presentations, and time for a Q&A with the symposium audience. Lets all get submitting!
